Protected Harbor is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Lakeland and Fort Myers Florida, whose sole purpose is to provide Group Homes for Developmentally Disabled Adults.
These homes will provide the quality of care each resident deserves. Activities will be available each day and occupational skills will be taught to the residents. Some of the residents will have regular jobs and will earn a wage. Every resident will be helped and encouraged to reach their full potential in life.
Protected Harbor began as the vision of Athena and George Pappas in January 2002 ,to provide an assisted living home close to them for Cleo, their developmentally disabled daughter. Athena and George started a Special Education Ministry in their church in January 2000. There they met Monika and Robert Newman in the summer of 2001.
Monika has a dream of one day building a recreation ranch for developmentally disabled individuals of all ages. As Athena shared her vision with Monika, they both realized they had been brought together for a purpose.
The prayers that followed led to the beginnings of Protected Harbor.
